Yeliu geological park

Today me and Yini finally made it to Yeliu after last weeks interruption by the typhoon. It was a beautiful day for exploring an ocean side park albeit a bit hot. The sky was clear and the water a bright turquoise blue. The only problem was the tourists, I do admit to being one myself but, in a very Taiwanese way the whole place hade been fixed up to suit tourists, mainly form mainland china. The walkways were absolutely full of them and it felt kind of crowded.

There were even some guards blowing whistles when you touched a rock or went past some arbitrary “safety” line. Although there were many nice rock formations the feeling was kind of spoiled by the crowd. At the most famous rock, on that resembles the head of a queen there was a long queue for taking photos so I didn’t bother with that.

When we got further out on the small peninsula however, it was almost tourist free and very nice. The rock formations out there were less spectacular but still beautiful. The view of north east Taiwan was also nice. In general it was a nice day but Ye liu would be better with less tourists.

Ketchup Krig!

Har just kommit tillbaks från Taiwan Tomato Sauce Fight. Ett gäng sydafrikanska engelsklärare här istan hade ordnat ett litet event på stranden några kilometer från stan. Vi började med att utrusta oss med kläder som vi kunde smutsa ned, jag och Johan gjorde en poäng av att skaffa vita kläder, och några flaskor ketchup och åkte ned till stranden. efter att ha åkt fel ett par gånger kom vi till slut fram, snackade lite med de andra och samlades för ett förefoto. Sen drog striden igång. Det var ketchup överallt och folk sprang åt alla håll i en vild frenezi. Skitkul helt enklet.

Efter striden sköljde vi av oss i havet och sedan tände någon en brasa så vi kunde värma oss och sitta och snacka ett tag.

När det mörknadfe ytterligare kände vi oss hungriga så vi åkte in till stan och hittade ett gäng utbytesstudenter som grillade på skolan, så vi hängde där ett tag och fick lite gratis mat. En bra dag men nu är vi trötta så det är dags att sova.

Liten uppdatering

Min dator har varit mestadels avstängd det senaste eftersom laddaren gick sönder och jag bara har ca 2,5 timmars batteritid. Därmed har jag inte uppdaterat eller hunnit lägga upp några bilder. Försökte få tag i en ny laddare härom dagen men det visade sig vara en beställningsvara så i morse handlade jag en lödkolv och lagade min gamla. Kan börja med att lägga upp lite bilder från månfestivalen.

 Finns oftast inte så mycket at visa från hot springs men denna hade en rolig ruschbana.

Igår tog jag tag i lite skolarbete som jag hoppade över under festivalen och sedan på kvällen lagade vi köttbullar och bjöd hem lite folk.

Förutom att laga min dator har jag ägnat fredagen åt att plugga, det blir rätt mycket med tre kurser och mest ta det lugnt. Mer uppdatering imorgon.

Moon festival

If you read my other blog, you probably figured out that the typhoon was a lot of nothing here in Hsinchu. Many other cities such as Taipei some 80 km north of us had floods and strong winds. Anyway, we were pretty much stuck in the city for the weekend and only visited the beach as you saw in the pictures. The second week of school has started but just took a short break for the moon festival.

Yesterday evening we had a small barbeque party in the flat, we used a small barbeque on the balcony so the apartment smells like smoke and meat but that’s fine, i like both. Today me and Yini took the scooter up to the mountains on only half a tank of petrol (about the size of a big jug) and ended up in a hot spring overlooking jungle clad mountains and a river. Both the drive up on winding mountain roads in the beautiful landscape and the hot spring were really nice. On the way down it looked like we would run out of petrol at any time as the needle was pointing to the bottom however, we got to zhudong, a suburb to Hsinchu on what was left and the engine didn’t even cut out, we simply drove to the nearest petrol station. In Zhudong* we stopped by a market for some food and a look at the full moon, that was also nice. We went home and called it a day, a nice one at that.

 

 

 

 

*In chinese Zhudong is written 竹東 and the town I live in, Hsinchu is written 新竹. As you can see the last character in Hsinchu corresponds with the first one in in Zhudong (Zhu/Chu/Jhu, depending on spelling, means bamboo) The second one in Zhudong means east, so Zhudong is quit simply east Hsinchu.

This weekend we were planning to go to Yeliu park with lots of interesting rock formations, check it out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yehliu, but the arrival of a Typhoon is probably going to postpone the trip. The park may close and even if it is open, it might not be so nice if the weather is bad. More updates if the typhoon strikes.

Skolan har börjat på riktigt!

Idag började skolan på riktigt, jag hade en kinesiska lektion på morgonen och sedan en till på eftermiddagen. Morgonens lektion var toklätt, eftermiddagens toksvår. Det jämnar ut sig i längden men en sak är säker, jag kommer vara duktig på kinesiska när jag återvänder. Har också hittat en trevlig klasskamrat, Reetta från Finland. Hon tar samma kurser som jag och några till så vi kommer umgås en del. Det här blir bra, 好.

Fika!

The Chinese word for coffe is 咖啡 (Kafei) if you switch them around you get 啡咖 (Feika) which is rather close to the Swedish word “fika” which is best explained as "having some coffee and maybe something more” . I hereby declare that Fike should be translated to Chinese as 啡咖.

Back

I have come back to Taiwan for one semester (four months). I will stay here to study Chinese and, of course, see my girlfriend. School starts tomorrow but I have already done two of the things I have been longing to do, have a weird drink from one of the many tea bars and drive a scooter. Will tell you more shortly.

Förberedelser

Sist jag skrev var bara en vanlig uppdatering efter en resa. Sen dess har saker och ting gått snabbt. Jag har gått på intervju för exjobb, bestämt mig för att jag inte vill exjobba och köpt biljetter till Taipei. Jag åker helt sonika tillbaks till Taiwan för att läsa kinesiska en termin. sen dess har jag haft fullt upp, jag har sagt upp min lägenhet, sök visum, och en hel massa annat. Idag har jag varit upptagen med att köra saker från min lägenhet till ett förråd på Shurgard i min lilla hyrbil. det är verkligen kul att köra runt helt på egen hand i en liten miniatyrbil, synd bara att den känns så plastig. Åter till förberedelserna, nyss hämtade jag ut mitt pass på posten med ett visum i och ikväll ska jag köra sista vändan till Shurgard. Imorn blir det städa och sen sticker jag.
