entering Laos

The keywords of the day are "lush" and "rural". Up in the mountains absolutely everything is green. A small strip of fading tarmack slithers through as the single sign of civilisation and at its edges the jungle soon takes over. It can all be surmised in that one word - lush.

As we exit the mountains and come down to the plains, rural takes over as the defining word. In some of the small villages dotted along the road, the surface changes from asphalt to dry, orange earth and on the sides are small houses, dried out rice paddies and the occasional cow. The houses are generally made from wood with leaves weaved together to form the walls and for some reason most of them are proped up un stilts. And that, it seems, is it, a dusty road, rice fields and small houses, no shops, no restaurants, nothing.

As we come in to Vientiane the landscape changers, buildings here are made from cement and bricks rather than wood and there are shops and such  around but it feels much more like a small town than the capital city. finally, I'm here, after 22 hours on a bus. All in all it was not such a bad trip . The bus had aircon, the seats were semicomfortable and the other passangers were not too noisy or unkind. And I gues it helped a bit that I could do nothing about the situation so my agrivation subsided considerably. I am glad it is over however and i am happy to be here in Vientiane. Time to have some fun!

Postal service, Lao style, just load the boxes on the passenger bus.

LUSH!

RURAL!
